I have always dreamed of going to Bhutan. Images of Tigers Nest Monastery have fascinated me for years. While on a family trip this summer, I received a text from a dear friend telling me that Kalu Rinpoche was leading a pilgrimage to Bhutan, and I realized I could achieve this dream of mine.
Months later, the weather was dark and grey in Vancouver, as it always is in November; I was on a plane flying due east, high over the Pacific. When I arrived in Bhutan, the pilgrimage was better than I could have imagined. Kalu Rinpoche was bringing a Buddha relic from France to Bhutan, and our pilgrimage began with a three-day Manlam, during which Bhutanese citizens could view the relic and receive blessings from Rinpoche.
What a powerful experience. It was the perfect introduction to this beautiful country and serene, and kind people. Tens of thousands of people gathered, and the calm devotion was inspiring. Surrounded by monks and nuns tirelessly chanting and Rinpoche blessing all the pilgrims, I felt incredibly privileged to witness such beautiful displays of devotion and empathy.
In the days that followed we explored Bhutan, and then we were able to visit Tigers Nest or Taktsang Monastery. The climb to Taktsang is tough; it is located 2,950 meters above sea level, but it makes the reward of getting there even more special. Knowing that Padmasambhava and Yeshe Tshogyal had meditated in the caves that have become Taktsang was extremely powerful for all of us. Hiking up the mountain with Rinpoche and having him give teachings was one of the most memorable moments of my life.
Kalu Rinpoche and Bhutanese people have left me with such gratitude. My intention is to take this feeling of peace, safety and calmness and bring it into my life at home and into my counselling practice. Getting back to Vancouver, I felt the rush of needing to do and be so many different things. Returning to the experience and the feelings of the Monlam and Takstang has allowed me to be more present and content. The journey will stay with me always.
Knowing that I was able to have this experience has allowed me to bring a new openness and excitement to my clients. Experiencing new cultures and ways of living has significantly impacted me personally and professionally.
